The company had a skills deficit in the area of moderation. They had been relying on their HR department to handle any problems on their extensive forums network which worked well until someone posted a pornographic video in one of the discussions. This was found and was immediately circulated via various social media outlets as proof that they could not control their networks and that it was open day for anyone who wanted to abuse them.
WiredTrust was engaged to advise on mitigating the immediate impact of the incident, to audit the companies policies and procedures and to create bespoke training for a new moderation team which was to be put in place. The moderation training went beyond just reviewing materials using new software but also raising the moderators awareness of how communities developed and should be actively moderated, privacy and piracy, potential threats from predators and how to take care of yourself as a moderator. Some companies need specialist training in dealing with online sexual predators, what to look out for, how to mitigate the risk and how to take care of yourself physically and emotionally.
The company were able to go through the audit for the Safe Seal with flying colours and with a well trained moderation team were able to build their influence online with their existing and potential clients.
